Resistance 2 Public Beta starts Oct. 23

    By Mike Koss | October 22, 2008

Playstation Underground has just sent out notice that the Resistance 2 beta will be opened up to the public starting October 23. It appears that although it will be a public beta, there will still be a limited amount of slots opened for potential Chimera-infused soldiers. So if you want to test the game, and more specifically the insanely huge multiplayer matches, hop on over the Resistance 2 site and sign-up now. Maybe I’ll see you there.

I loved the original Resistance and after the first screenshots came out my mouth was already salivating at the chance to take on some of the largest baddies known to any FPS. Some of the other features of Resistance 2 include 60-player online matches; and, experience and class-based co-op play that also has a storyline that is seperate from the single-player story. Also, just like the first iteration, this one is jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

Resistance: Fall of Man was the first game I played to completion on my PS3, after playing about 15 minutes of Metal Gear Solid 4. From a FPS standpoint, it did many things well and I only had a few gripes about the game.

The first one was a common gripe I have about most FPS’s that attemp it, and also why I’m eying Mirror’s Edge learily, which is ‘jumping’ levels. Whenever the player is forced to make a series of jumps around a level and a missed jump results in death and playing the whole jumping scenario all over, I have immediate bad flashbacks to Turok on the Nintendo 64. That game was notorious for them, and quickly built my hatred for it in any FPS.

The other gripe I had was how it seemed like it’s very easy to die with a run-and-gun mentality even though with the strength and fire rate of the weapons I would have expected the enemies to have been vanquished a little faster. When a tactic is totally removed from a game that deserves it, it saddens me that the developer over-looked it or intentionally removed it. That’s not to say that it should be there in games like Metal Gear Solid, but when you equip a FPS character with a hand cannon and a large magazine, one would expect to be able to start firing and mowing down enemies.

If either of these two elements appear in the game, it’s still not going to deter my from purchasing and playing it. The first was one was too much fun not to pick up the second.
