Knights of the Old Republic MMO is Officially Announced

Submitted by on October 21, 2008 – 11:43 pmNo Comment

So after many, many months of speculation, the worst kept secret in the history of gaming is out of the bag officially.  As the Thunderbirds would say – “Knights of the Old Republic MMO is Go!”.  The first shots of the game were released, along with a plan as to how the game would work, and a new title, Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The Knights of the Old Republic universe is set some 4000 years before the events that take place in Star Wars: Episode I.  You will be allowed to play as a Jedi, Sith or other unannounced trade.  Bioware is looking to change the face of MMO storytelling, by having your decisions affect the world in general.  We all know that Bioware put together one of the best examples of how a Star Wars game should be made with Knights of the old Republic.  Now, they want to take the formula of combat, RPG development, and top notch story and weave them all together into an MMORPG that could be set to compete against World of Warcraft, no pressure there.

The development of this MMO is rather strange, as the Star Wars brand is owned by LucasArts.  Bioware is making the game, but EA will not publish the game, as that honor goes to Lucasarts.  Nothing has been said about how Bioware was allowed to participate in this, but I would assume that EA is getting something out of this whole arrangement.

For more info on the game, check out the new Official Site.  No release dates have been given out yet, but rumors placed the game’s release in 2010.
