A first-hand look at the Parsons School LittleBigPlanet project
By Joe Fourhman | September 25, 2008
GameSetWatch has a nicely detailed account of the recent LittleBigPlanet design competition, held at the Parsons School of Design in New York City. Student teams were given 24 hours to work inside LittleBigPlanet’s expansive sandbox, and awards were given for such achievements as “Most Innovative,” “Best Tools,” and “Most Fun.”
GameSetWatch writer Matt Hawkins reports that “55 pizzas and gallons of Red Bull” were consumed as the teams worked on their projects. Between crashing PS3s and general student fatigue, many students bowed out or ran up against insurmountable odds, but every team finished the competition with some kind of mostly-completed LBP creation. Among the final results were a slingshot game, a rocket-powered car, and a giant washing machine. The winning team created a platforming level where the entire board takes place inside a moving clockwork monster, which Hawkins admiringly compares to Shadow of the Colossus.
If you’re at all interested in LittleBigPlanet’s potential, give Hawkins’s article a read. LBP is going to set new benchmarks for user-generated content. Modding for the masses. Spore what now?
