The Original Developer Flame War

Tonight on the podcast, we recorded a segment on overzealous developers who feel that it is in their best interest to take on the complaints of the journalists, bloggers and game buying public.  We looked at Denis Dyack, Luc Bernard and Jonathan Blow, but I wanted to make sure that we did not forget the OG of the developer flame wars, and that title belongs to Derek Smart.

Derek Smart created a game over many years called Battlecruiser 3000AD.  He claimed over and over how great this magnum opus would be and that Battlecruiser 3000AD would be the new way that games were developed.

Unfortunately, the game was shipped like a thief in the night by Take Two, hoping to recoup their losses.  This was a big problem, because the game was not finished.  Not by a longshot.  And with the poor reviews and previews, Derek went on the offensive.  To take a gander at the complete documented incidents over at TheFlameWar.com. It is an eye opener on how bad a developer can get with press and his own publisher.
