Summertime is Trophy Time

Submitted by Paul Munn on August 5, 2008 – 1:00 pmComments

UnchartedYesterday Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune came to life once again on my PS3 with the news of the 1.1 patch adding Trophies at — oddly enough — a 1:1 ratio with the medals already present in the game. It’s the third game to offer Trophies, but it’s the first to dangle the coveted Platinum Trophy in front of dedicated gamers everywhere. Super Stardust HD and PixelJunk Eden don’t have a Platinum Trophy available.

Back when I played through Uncharted for the first time as a rental I took the extra effort to find every Treasure in the game and took a crack at some of the easier combat-related medals, but this patch isn’t retroactive — you have to start all over again. I’m not unhappy since I’d really wanted to buy it but didn’t want to spend the cash until Home integration was rolled out — back then we were told Home would appear simultaneously with trophy support. I recently picked up a used copy of Uncharted and the lush jungles, tight gunplay, and believable ruin-climbing physics had me mesmerized as I got my very first Trophy last night. It took some effort to stop playing it and turn my attention back to Metal Gear Solid 4.

It looks like this is a big month for Trophy support. If the 48 Trophies in Uncharted don’t keep you busy you’ll be seeing Warhawk get its trophy patch with the 1.5 update on the 27th. A small set of those are retroactive and directly tied to your rank, but the vast majority will be new and I’m happy to see at least one of them is altruistically inclined — you can get a Trophy for setting up a dedicated ranked server for four hours or so. Also coming in that update are a set of offline tutorials to draw in new players which will be nice since both the disc and downloadable version of the game are both now just $29.99 as a Greatest Hits title.

For more information on the Uncharted patch, check out the PlayStation Blog. Warhawk trophies are discussed over at Kotaku.
