MK vs DCU: Green Lantern / Joker screens, more characters revealed

In advance of their Leipzig press conference, Midway released nine new Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe screenshots, spotlighting recent character reveals Green Lantern (Hal Jordan version) and the Joker.

Kotaku noted four more MK vs DCU combatants, revealed via a post-speech slideshow: Raiden and Kano representing MK, and Wonder Woman and Deathstroke from the DC side. This brings the confirmed roster up to eighteen.

I always wonder what the non-comics-reading populace thinks when they see things like this, with a “realistic” Flash getting tossed aside in a spray of blood. As a comics fan, this is pretty much par for the course these days, as the comics audience grows ever older and demands greater storytelling depth. But to the outside observer, it must look like an unfortunate bastardization of the Super Friends, designed by nihilistic ad men grasping for the Hot Topic Pro Piercer demographic.

Some time ago, MK honcho Ed Boon unveiled a list of character archetypes that were hints to the DC lineup (source: Kotaku). Here’s the list, matched up to the confirmed roster.

Prototypical Hero: Superman
Speedster: Flash
Mystical Hero: Captain Marvel
Masked Vigilante: Batman
Military Hero: Green Lantern
Amazon Queen: Wonder Woman
Sexy Villainness: Catwoman
Crazy Villain: The Joker

So we’re down to two open slots on Boon’s original teaser list… Lex Luthor (in his mecha battlesuit, I’m sure), Darkseid, Doomsday, and Bane are all strong possibilities.

Hopefully, we’ll see more than that in the final game. Martian Manhunter? Robin? Additional Green Lanterns? Blue Beetle? Lobo?
