Are you threatening me?
My recent praise for Nintendo Power notwithstanding, I’m going to whine a little bit about the things they’ve done since their transition to Future US that I don’t approve of. This envelope is not an issue for me, I just found it amusing, because I have to wonder, “or else” what? Nintendo Power has stopped offering incentives to renew the subscription when it lapses, so they’ve resorted to comical threats from imaginary bounty hunters.
Do you remember those bonuses? You could pick from a long list of strategy guides for games on Nintendo platforms, often even last-gen titles. You could get a tee shirt. A few times, they even gave away a Legend of Zelda compilation disc, which was absolutely legendary. What do we get now? Well, I have to admit the content has improved in the magazine a lot, and I enjoy getting the magazine even more than my EGM subscription, which is actually free. Speaking of which, Ziff Davis, I think I’ve figured out why you’re having so much trouble right now.
Popping open this menacing window envelope, I find that all they’re really offering me is a special “digest version” of the Mario Kart Wii strategy guide. Seeing as how I’m not one of the seven million consumers who bought Mario Kart Wii, that’s pretty useless to me. Though if I’m going to go by the strategy guide for Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, the full version of the guide may be equally useless to someone who does own the game.
The point is that it makes more sense for me to just go for the $5 yearly subscription deal that I’ve been using for the past few years through a third party vendor. With a strategy guide or tee shirt or game, that value goes away and Future US makes bank. Just sayin’.
