More buttons may not automatically make a game more complex, but it does automatically make it harder to learn. The fewer actions you need to learn, the lower the learning curve.

First, the additional controller buttons look like a combination of a SNES and a Genesis controller.

Second, lately I've been less and less impressed with Mr. CliffyB. There was a review with him about GoW2 and he made some comments that I thought were just absurd. I think it was in EGM, but I don't think I have the mag anymore or I'd grab the exact comment. I do like the intuitive controls that we get from the motion capabilities of the Wii (see: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption) or House of the Dead 4, albeit the latter's were more SHAKE FOR <insert action here>. I do hate how overly convoluted games got with their required buttons (see: Descent: Freespace), but at other times love it when its executed properly (see: Mech Assault). All in all it comes down to the game properly engaging the player without inundating them with a complex control scheme.

More buttons != more complexity.
