UFO Looks Like An Xbox 360 Controller

In a recent chat about Gears of War 2′s multiplayer features, CliffyB spoke with Computer and Video Games about the similarities between the abundance of buttons and design of game controllers and alien space ships?
“I hope if there’s a new Xbox that there’ll be fewer buttons on the controller,” and “This is purely me speculating in my own realm of game development, but if you look at a controller right now it looks like an alien spaceship,”
Cliff goes on to talk about other ways of making controllers interactive and more intuitive: much like the motion control for the Wii, built-in cameras and, well less buttons in general.
I think Cliffy has a good point there, but I honestly have no issues with the current design of the 360 or PS3 controller – but maybe that’s because I’ve been gaming for almost 3 decades. Maybe that’s one appealing factor to new gamers and the Nintendo Wii: They don’t have to sit there for hours fiddling with a plethora of buttons and triggers just to make it through a stage.

It took me a few seconds to realize the controller pic was altered.
That’s the beauty of Photoshoppery! Do you like the strategic placements?
Coming up next…Cliffy B’s Party Games!
First, the additional controller buttons look like a combination of a SNES and a Genesis controller.
Second, lately I’ve been less and less impressed with Mr. CliffyB. There was a review with him about GoW2 and he made some comments that I thought were just absurd. I think it was in EGM, but I don’t think I have the mag anymore or I’d grab the exact comment. I do like the intuitive controls that we get from the motion capabilities of the Wii (see: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption) or House of the Dead 4, albeit the latter’s were more SHAKE FOR. I do hate how overly convoluted games got with their required buttons (see: Descent: Freespace), but at other times love it when its executed properly (see: Mech Assault). All in all it comes down to the game properly engaging the player without inundating them with a complex control scheme.
More buttons != more complexity.
More buttons may not automatically make a game more complex, but it does automatically make it harder to learn. The fewer actions you need to learn, the lower the learning curve.
if he had his way there would obly be the B button….
