IGN Insider says Rock Band on-disk songs will be offered as FREE DLC for Rock Band 2.

I asked for it. Now we’re getting it. (Possibly.)
Kotaku has posted a snippet of an IGN Insider column that says Rock Band 2 owners will be allowed to import the on-disk songlist of Rock Band 1 as a free download. IGN 360 editor Nate Ahern reveals the Rock Band rumor while simultaneously spreading partisan FUD about Guitar Hero World Tour:
If you bought Rock Band 1 then chances are you’ll feel cheated by the release of RB2, thus you’d think that GHWT would be the way to go as it somewhat redefines the music gaming genre. However, if you didn’t buy the first Rock Band then I would absolutely agree with notagoth. Immediately upon purchasing Rock Band 2 you’ll have the ability to download a huge library of songs, as well as all of the songs off of the original disc as a free download. Then again, Guitar Hero World Tour does allow users to create and share their own songs, so it’s really only a matter of time until the Rock Band library is eclipsed.
OK, getting the original songs for free is awesome – although presumably this only applies to people who bought the first Rock Band? – but I feel we’re missing some context on the rest of Ahern’s quote. Guitar Hero World Tour “somewhat redefines the music gaming genre”? As in what, aping a competitor’s year-old peripheral-based music game? Maybe Ahern really likes those boss battles.
I guess he’s referring to the create-a-song feature, since he then launches into “Guitar Hero World Tour does allow users to create and share their own songs, so it’s really only a matter of time until the Rock Band library is eclipsed.” Say what again? Without vocals, there’s no mass-market comparison between user-created songs and genuine music legend master tracks. Heck, even with the ability to record vocals, there’s no comparison… unless Mick Jagger himself buys the game.
Still, great potential news for Rock Band fans. RB2 could debut with 100+ songs ready to rock for naught but the price you’ve already paid.
