UK Rules That Mod Chips Are Legal
In a ruling today in the United Kingdom, appeals court Judge Justice Jacobs, has ruled that a mod chip does not necessarily circumvent copy protection in a console. The judge in his ruling made the finding that the copyright infringement happens long before the mod chip is involved, as the disc has either been burned or downloaded from a p2p client, normally.
The great thing about this ruling is that it looks to use a game’s terms and conditions against them. Think about it, how many times have you read the section where it says that making copies of the disc is an infringement on the copyright holder.
The kicker of the case, is that the the defendant was awarded payment of legal fees.

That is interesting stuff. I like that a mod chip is not inherently illegal. A mod chip could be used to do any number of things, whether it’s circumventing region protection or something else. While this may violate terms of service and void your warranty, it shouldn’t put you in prison.
