PS3 Firmware 2.40: Don’t Look Back, You Can Never Look Back
You’ve got the PS Blog to fill you in on PS3 firmware 2.40′s walkthroughs (XMB and trophies), and Joystiq’s dismemberment of the feature lists and trophy explanations with their hands-on time to look at, so I’m just going to be quick and tell you what I love, what I expected, and what I don’t like about this new PS3 firmware coming July 2nd. I know I’ll be hitting System Update over and over again up until that day comes.
Love it:
Text messaging.
Headset and bluetooth configuration.
Google searching (Update: Can’t use browser in-game, PS Blog.)
Friends list capacity doubled to 100.
Expected it:
Trophy support needs to be patched into existing games.
Soundtrack support needs a patch.
Hate-it:
Must replay games to get trophies! GAH!
Just one PSN game to have trophies at launch?! I love Super Stardust HD, but cmon!
More?
And not to be greedy or anything since this is a big list, but I hope there’s more stuffed in there. I’m still pining for RSS support so I can have my PS3 manage all those downloads and just throw’em on my PSP from there without needing a PC to do it.
Needing to re-play a whole game that gets patched for trophy support just means that almost no developer is going to bother doing it. I’d love them to prove me wrong, but I don’t think they will. From July 2nd forward, though, we’ll be watching carefully for the first wave of games with trophy support.

While trophies are nice, I think it misses out on the quick glance factor of achievement points. When I look at someone’s profile, I can see a numerical score or how they are doing in comparison to me. I can break it down by game, and then, if I deem necessary, what they got in the game vs me.
I could be overestimating this, but it just seems like a number works better than a jeweled cup, at least in this sense.
The PS3 can’t play two games at once???? What a limitation. Haven’t those Sony developers ever heard of Alt Tabbing. geez
A jeweled cup? You’ve been watching The Last Crusade again haven’t you?
Now that we have 2.40′s feature set I can update an article I’ve been working on for a long time about what the PS3 Firmware really needs and finally post it. I also want to take my own hands-on impressions into account before I tidy that up.
Well, you wouldn’t want the trophy represented by a carpenter’s cup, would you? Either way, I still found it amusing to watch the trophies video, and the guy seemed to be looking for any word he could use that wasn’t “achievement”.
Wow, I feel psychic.

Anyhoo, Civ for PS3 will have Trophy support. We’ll see how it goes there.
I saw elsewhere that Bioshock will be the first 3rd party title to get Trophies on the PS3. If Civ Rev had it that would be nice.

Anyway I forget how easy it is to back up one’s saved games on the PS3. That’s why they won’t retroactively apply trophies to saved games.

And there’s a new FAQ up at the Blog. Looks like no browser access from within a game. Bummer, no Google searches while playing after all.
