Overcoming Difficulty: When Gamers Overcome a Challenge

Submitted by on June 19, 2008 – 1:18 pmNo Comment

As gamers, it always seems that we are in a neverending battle to overcome a series of hurdles or difficulties to beat a construct made by a developer.  On the other hand, the developer is set to find any way possible to make sure it is a challenge for you to get to that endgame sequence.

Throughout the years of gaming, there have been many games, but most of the time, getting to the end sequence is not that difficult.  Sometimes it can be a bit frustrating, but never to the point of setting the gamer into a state of frothing madness.

But then, there are the games that seem to push gamers to the brink of sanity.  You spend countless days and nights, trying to get past that last mission.  I am sure you have all had these moments.  I can think back through my gaming collection and see a handful of games that have always been a challenge for me to solve.  Doom was one of the first, as I was never all that great at the game, but refused to use cheat codes, thereby making the endboss nearly impossible to beat.  I finally did it, and it was a sweet sense of satisfaction to make it past that boss.  A boss battle that I highly enjoyed, because I felt like I had accomplished a feat of greatness.

I could reminisce, for hours about the game endings that felt like this, but I thought I would focus on my most recent game that gave me this challenge to overcome – Rock Band vocals.  I have never been all that great at the guitar, bass or the drums in Rock Band.  I can get into Hard mode, but never get to the end of that difficulty tier, mostly because of Metallica, but moreso, because it is hard.  But the vocals were a place where I could succeed, and I did, all the way through Expert Mode, but I always seemed to fail when it came to scoring a 100% on Expert in vocals.

It does not seem like a difficult task until you realize how hard it can be to hit the exact pitch necessary to get an Awesome on a segment.  A friend thought it couldn’t be that hard until he tried and failed 12% in on Expert in Sufferage City, by David Bowie.

Well, after weeks of trying, I finally got past that hurdle, and did it in style, putting myself in the ranks as the 24th best singer for the song, “Song With a Mission”, by The Sounds.  It is not a super popular song in Rock Band, but I have always been a fan of The Sounds going back to their self titled debut album, so it was a given to buy it and try to get 100% on it.  But for weeks it eluded me until two nights ago, when everything was just hitting right and when I saw the final screen with the 100% Expert wording, I felt rewarded.  I gained an achievement for it, but it went beyond that.  I felt like I had come to meet the challege of the developers, and felt fulfilled by that knowledge.

Let us know what you feel was a gaming challenge that you found a way to overcome.  Maybe you got the Ranked #1 in the World in GRAW, or maybe you rolled a Pac Man machine, so if you did, let us know in the comments below.
