Mega Man 9 surprises as a very retro WiiWare title

Submitted by Stephen Munn on June 26, 2008 – 6:09 pmComments

Here’s something Wii-owning Megafans like myself are sure to love: Capcom has now made Mega Man 9 official, and has revealed that one platform it will appear on is the one and only WiiWare. Nintendo’s original software download service has made a real splash, offering some great titles on the cheap in what’s only now been a few weeks’ time. With a high-profile start like Final Fantasy and acclaimed original IPs like LostWinds, WiiWare’s doing well. I have a feeling we’ll see more of this kind of a thing in the future.

Excited? Well, good, because I’m not sure how you’re going to take the next part. You ready? Here goes.

It’s going to look and play like the original NES games. Three-color sprites, old school sounds, the works. That’s right, Capcom’s making a new NES Mega Man game and releasing it on WiiWare. Let’s call this the ballsiest move I’ve seen in a long time. Let’s see if they go the whole nine and make it five bucks to boot.

Like the graphics, the story takes a decidedly simplistic yet classic approach. Robots are causing havoc, and Dr. Wily blames Dr. Light for the wreckage. Mega Man sets out to clear his creator’s name while blowing up many, many things. And speaking of bosses, the article also gives us a look at the new roster: Magma Man, Galaxy Man, Jewel Man, Concrete Man, Hornet Man, Plug Man, Tornado Man, and Splash Woman. Yes, that says “woman”; after all, it’s 2008 and the series needed more fodder for robot-on-robot fanfic.

Now who’s developing? Inticreates! That’s the team who’s made all the best Mega Man games in recent years. Unless I’m mistaken, they’re made up of much of the original Mega Man team who left Capcom years ago and were later contracted to build Mega Man Zero and its sequels.
