Gaming is Expensive

A recent study from GameStrata tells us that the average gamer spends about $765 per year on games and hardware while over their peak years of gaming from 18 to 48 the average gamer spends more than $30,500 on games hardware.

“With forecasters estimating this year’s sales will reach nearly $23 billion, it’s clear that gaming is the fastest-growing sector in the entertainment industry,” said Barry Dorf, COO of GameStrata. “The best part is that the trend doesn’t show any signs of slowing. In spite of predictions of a sluggish economy, gamers continue to invest their time and money into electronic entertainment.”

I did 5 seconds of math and figured that about $1680 a year go to games for me. That’s an average of 2 per month and in Canadian dollars. To me, $765 doesn’t seem all that high for an average.

Other more recent polls conducted was the odd study into Xbox 360 vs. PS3 owners by Experian and a Pop Cap Games’ casual game study on discontent employees starved for game breaks.
