Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.

Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels trailer hums along

I have to admit I generally feel pretty much spent on the whole Star Wars thing. Lloyd Hannesson of the DS:Life and WiiSpot podcasts recently put it perhaps as well as I’ve heard it: everyone was a Star Wars fan before the prequels came out. I burned out on it after Episode II, and the last Star Wars video game I bought was Rogue Leader for Gamecube.

The game Lloyd was talking about was this one, which had just been announced. Now we’ve got this trailer, and I find myself reconsidering. The sound of the humming lightsabers kind of draws my attention in a very Pavlovian kind of a way. While I drool, I have to ask. Could a lightsaber dueling game on Wii really turn out as well as we hope? Let’s have a look at Krome Studios’ record.

Here are the games they proudly claim on their website, along with their review aggregates from Metacritic for the platforms we’re looking at here where possible.

  • Space Captain Steve’s Blade Kitten (What? Oh. Uh, upcoming)
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (upcoming)
  • Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 3: Night of the Quinkan (69/100 on Gamecube)
  • The Legend of Spyro: Eternal Night (60/100 on Wii)
  • Viva PiƱata: Party Animals (56/100 on 360)
  • Hellboy (57/100 on PS3)

So as you see, no real standouts here. Not terrible scores, but you’ll understand if I don’t flip out with excitement over this game just yet based on a trailer that shows nothing regarding how the controls will work.
