Valve Wants to Envelop PC Gaming In a Steamcloud

Submitted by Joe Haygood on May 30, 2008 – 1:29 pmComments

The good folks at Rock, Paper, Shotgun were invited to a sitdown with Gabe Newell at Valve, where he talked about the new initiative from Valve called Steamcloud. Steamcloud is to be an expansion of the Steam experience where you can have user profle information stored online, on Valve servers.  think like game settings, saved games, etc. that could follow you wherever you go.

Also the service will scan your system before purchasing a game, letting you know right then and there whether you can play that game.  Its similar to what the Windows performance index is trying to do, but this is a more in-depth analysis as it is not just a score, but a comparison of you actual system specs against the specs that are needed for play.

There is more that they are looking at for this service and for Steam as well, including Gabe’s idea to get every PC game ever on the service.  If this become’s true, I am so there to buy Starflight and Wizardry through Steam.

  • I love this idea. It would be great to play a game for awhile at home then be able to pick up right where I left off on my laptop later without monkeying around with save files or anything.
