Haze Demo – Quick Impression

Submitted by on May 15, 2008 – 3:16 pm7 Comments

Haze DemoLast week when the Haze demo hit PSN I was as giddy as a school kid with a handful of cupcakes, but after playing the game for a good hour I came away seriously unimpressed. I decided not to write anything about the demo because I was getting ready to leave on a trip to Chicago to see a Cubs game, and I thought that maybe my judgment might have been affected by the hype and the fact that I was distracted planning my trip. So I went to see the game (CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN!) and gave myself a few days to recover, then I dived back into the world of HAZE. After another hour I came away with an even more contemptible view of the game then I had before. Almost everything about Haze is mediocre, except the graphics…those are bad! The developers have been touting the use of the nectar substance as a cool gameplay element, when in fact it feels like a gimmick and just isn’t fun to use at all. Beyond the nectar Haze plays just like any other FPS, which is not a horrible thing, but there is nothing worth $60 going on here. If there is one good thing to point out about Haze it would be that the controls are solid, and the sound is decent, but overall this demo made me take Haze off my buy list and I am not so sure if it will even see a rent.

Let me know what you thought of the Haze demo in the comments section.

    That’s too bad, it looks good.

    “except the graphics…those are bad!”

    Bad as in good or bad as in bad?

    I liked it, but I already have other great shooters to play. I think the FPS gameplay was good, and that the use of Nectar was a nice twist. Did I see anything earth-shaking? Nope. Do I still have UT3, a much higher quality shooter still needing much more play time? Sure do.

    That’s why unless it gets some high-8 scores for a great storyline I’m not likely to play it anytime soon.

    @Shane

    I meant bad as in Blurry Textures work and really boring environments. Paul kind of hits it on the head. In today’s FPS soaked market you have to have something that stands out in some way, and Haze just did not seem to have that.

    Agree completely on Haze. Nectar is gimmicky and poorly implemented. The voice acting and dialogue are awful, even for an FPS. Perhaps I just noticed it more because the gameplay is so rote and hacky. Despite having all of the elements of a good FPS, the execution is meh. Haze misses completely.

    Nice job on giving it a second chance. I played for 10 minutes and knew it wasn’t for me. Of course, anything not involving Liberty City at the moment is getting neglected.

    I’m getting frustrated with Liberty City at about 40% completion. I know I always say this but – I’m getting older and games are getting harder. I’ve tried a couple of missions now like 7 times and can’t seem to pass them!

    I had some problems with some of the missions in GTA4 as well. You really have to plan out your attack on a few of the missions. I only have about 12 missions left in total and I hear 2 or 3 of them that are left are really hard…cant wait!
