    GTA IV Sales Stats

    By Shane | May 7, 2008

Microsoft’s Gamerscore team just sent us some GTA IV sales statistical goodness to munch on. Here are the highlights:

    • Xbox 360 console sales at retail went up 54%
    • More than 60% of all GTA games sold in the first week were the Xbox 360 version
    • Roughly 40% of new consoles selling with a copy of Grand Theft Auto IV

It’s great to see the console sales go up, but I hope there’s a patch to fix the crashing and freezing soon on the Xbox 360 or there will be a lot of new angry buyers. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had umpteen freezes and just plain BSD (Black Screens of Death) in single player mode since I started playing a week ago. The PS3 version just received a patch from Rockstar today to reduce strain on the GameSpy servers, thus eliminating lockups. No word on the Xbox 360 version yet, but I’m guessing it’s around the corner.

As for the PS3’s smitten piggyback ride on GTA IV’s popularity, it’s obvious that momentum is picking up for it and that’s great, but is it enough to put it back in the spotlight?

    Hi,

The Gamerscore Blog would like to congratulate Rockstar on the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV. GTA sold over 6 million units, and broke the entertainment record with over $500 million in sales.

We got some data from the US team, and we’re here to share that news with you:

    * Actual MS sales data from last week shows Xbox 360 console sales at retail went up 54% week-over-week as a result of GTA’s success
    * According to retailers more than 60% of all GTA games sold in the first week were the Xbox 360 version
    * Retailers are telling us that the game is attaching strongly to new console sales, with roughly 40% of new consoles selling with a copy of Grand Theft Auto IV

    Regarding Xbox LIVE:

    * In the first week, more than 2.3 million people played Grand Theft Auto IV on Xbox LIVE
    * GTA IV is now the number one played game on Xbox LIVE
    * Over the weekend, we saw the Xbox LIVE service reach 1 million concurrent users
    * Gamers have unlocked more than 12 million achievements worth over 100 million gamerscore points in GTA
    * Grand Theft Auto IV set a new record for time played, with the average gamer spending more than four hours playing the game on LIVE in the first week alone

    • 60% may be a majority percentage, but it's not the crushing figure I was expecting. The 360 has been on shelves a year longer, has promised DLC (which I still say is going to arrive on PS3 anyway), and has all the Live/Achievements stuff... and still only managed to leave 40% to PS3 sales? Despite their happy-go-lucky press release, they can not be thrilled with 60%.

sure they can considering that most of the fanbase was on th Playstation brand for what like 10 years?? this is huge that 40% is probably what is left of the hardcore audience on the PS3
