Reports of GTA IV Freezing Start to Crop Up

Submitted by Joe Haygood on April 29, 2008 – 2:28 pmComments

So here we are, about 12.5 hours after the release of Grand Theft Auto IV and we are already getting reports of the game causing freeze errors on early hardware, eerily similar to the issues that came up with Bully on early Xbox 360 consoles.

Rockstar has acknowledged that there are issues cropping up with early 20 and 60GB PS3 consoles, and has suggested removing and re-installing the game on the hard drive.  Several users have already tried this and have mentioned that it is an inconsisitant fix at best.

The 360 is not without its issues, with reports cropping up here and there about the system locking up while playing.  These reports are coming up less than the PS3 issues, but it is strange to see that Rockstar is having this issue again after dealing with it not more than three or four weeks ago with the release of Bully on the 360.  That game is slowly being fixed, but is still a work in progress.

Hopefully Rockstar comes up wih a fix soon, so players can get back to helping Nico take over Liberty City.  If anyone has had these issues with the console, go ahead and let us know, and we will follow up with Rockstar on the issue.

GTA IV freezes every time on startup for me :(. I am connected to the internet so I should have the latest patches
  • Richard Windsor
I had mine going for about 7 hours straight yesterday and didn't have any freezes. I guess I am just lucky.
  • Richard's games just don't freeze.
  • Kotaku says that Rockstar is working on the issue adn that their support department says it's affecting some 60GB PS3s as well as some Xbox 360's.

My own 60GB PS3 did freeze up once, but not during the intro like Kotaku says. It froze up during the mission that teaches you about drunkenness. You can tell because everything hangs -- the control, the video, and the audio.

I've also seen it shut down my PS3 when exiting the game to go back to the XMB. I've seen that happen with other games as well on rare occasions, and so far no ill effects have been seen with save data, but I continued playing, got through the same exact mission with no problems and haven't seen any other problems.

I do hope they patch it though. Shane's right, this long in development and it should definitely not be doing this on launch-model units.
  • That's sad considering how long the game has been in development. Nothing a patch won't fix!
