Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

October 28, 2011 – 12:44 pm |

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

Midway unveils Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

Submitted by on April 18, 2008 – 4:20 pm8 Comments

We all knew a new Mortal Kombat game was coming when Midway put up a countdown, however, I doubt any of us expected the direction the Mortal Kombat series was going to take. Midway is set to release Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe this fall on PS3 and Xbox 360. The game is obviously the 10-years-too-late answer to Marvel vs. Capcom. Two DC writers are on-board, but we’ll probably still get a ridiculous story. You can probably guess who will likely be on the character roster, but Batman, Superman, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion are the only ones revealed thus far. The game will also feature interactive environments to keep things interesting. However, there is some bad news.

Unfortunately, it appears the game will not have fatalities. This makes me wonder why they are going through the trouble of making a crossover game if they are going to strip out so much of what makes Mortal Kombat what it is. However, I still remain positive that the game will be more brutal than any stand-alone game with DC characters would ever be. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe will probably prove interesting even if I can’t forcefully remove Superman’s Kryptonian spine.

The trailer for the game can be found at Gamesradar, and an interview with Ed Boon can be found over at Gamespot.

    Few thoughts on this….

This seems to be a growing trend with fighting games. Another example is Soul Caliber 4 with Darth Vader and Yoda. Is this their gimmick to appeal to a general video game audience? Are fighters not as big as they use to be?

I don’t know what it is… but it seems like the DC and MK universes don’t mix well. I thought that Marvel Vs. Capcom seem a great fit. Maybe because Marvel Vs. Capcom is in 2D or capcom characters are more lighter and more cartoony which makes it a better fit with comics. MK universe seems too dark, real, for any comic super hero mix.

At any rate this won’t make the game bad but it is a big consideration they need to put in when making this game.

I agree, isn’t fatalities suppose to be one of the back bone icon for MK?

lol looks like developers are really starting to run out of ideas personally i think this is stupid

Again, when you combine universes its not usually a bad idea. There is a bunch of games that has done this and succeeded very well or came out decent. Kingdom Hearts, Xmen Vs. Capcom, Lego Starwars, Unreal Championship and Soul Caliber. I remember when Kingdom Hearts was first revealed, everybody was like WTF? When in the end it turn out to be one of Square’s biggest franchise. It’s a typical win-win situation if done correctly with the core game itself.

It always comes down to game play, this sort of stuff is just the exterior gimmick that never determines its quality of fun.

Dang… I should of just wrote a entry about this instead of all these comments…

This is the only thing they could have done to get me interested in a freakin’ Mortal Kombat game. And I’m still on the bubble.
