Metal Gear Online Beta Initial Impressions

Submitted by on April 26, 2008 – 1:22 pm3 Comments

I fired up the Metal Gear Online Beta last night just to check it out, and ended up playing for four hours strait. The game’s controls took a little getting used to, but are very tight. Character movement in the game seemed slow to me at first, as I’ve been playing a lot of Halo 3 lately, but as I played I came to appreciate the realistic pace. The graphics look great.

The “most fun” moments for me happened when I would see an enemy moving through the terrain and was able to successfully sneak up on him from behind. I got into some stand off situations with enemies in which we were both dancing around a set piece tossing grenades and trying to get the upper hand on one another. The gameplay works well.

On the critical side, there were a few connection issues, but nothing too serious. I never really got comfortable enough with the aiming mechanic, especially at close range. There was no voice chat, even though a few of us had microphone icons. And, the spawning was at times very unfriendly.

In the grand scheme of things, I’m left salivating even more for Metal Gear’s launch. I’ll be playing this beta as much as possible over the next few weeks. Before getting my hands on this thing, I had some doubt about whether they should be taking Metal Gear online. Now, I’m climbing onto the bandwagon and joining in on the fanboy chant.

Sounds like fun. I guess this is the first Metal Gear game to have MP functionality?

I’m no MG expert, but I believe this is the first time there has been an online or multiplayer option.

Looks ok, but the big question is whether it has enough depth to last as long as games like Halo & COD.
