How Do Other Developers Feel About Rockstar?

Submitted by Matthew Kellar on April 29, 2008 – 6:11 pmComments

Gamesradar has an interesting set of interviews up to coincide the release of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV. It’s a refreshing look at how many developers are simply gamers like the rest of us. It is nice to know they can still get excited about playing what the competition has to offer after toiling away on their own projects. Continue reading for some highlights.

Steve Bauman of Gas Powered Games:

GamesRadar: From a developer point of view how do you rate Rockstar?

Steve Bauman: They’re far from perfect, as they always manage to get a clunker of a mission or two in each game – I’m looking at you, helicopter mission from Vice City – but clearly the studio responsible for GTA is one of the most talented in the industry.

David Jaffe of Eat Sleep Play

GamesRadar: There’s no denying GTA IV is the most anticipated game of the year on 360 and PS3; what are your feelings about the game from what you’ve seen so far?

David Jaffe: As a developer, I am crapping in my pants. The game seems so big and so vast and there are so many things you can do that it has not simply raised the bar as to what is expected in a AAA game, but it’s taken the bar and hurled it into outer space. And that’s just single player. Toss in multiplayer – which seems like it could be huge – and toss in the fact that people who have played the game seem very, very impressed, and you pretty much have a sure-fire cocktail for scaring the crap out of other developers – us included.

Kent Hudson of Midway Studios Austin:

GamesRadar: From a developer point of view how do you rate Rockstar?

Kent Hudson: When it comes to capturing a certain time period or element of pop culture, no one does it better. Seriously, nobody. I really admire their ability to refine and iterate from rev to rev, and their production values are top notch.

Randy Pitchford of Gearbox Software:

GamesRadar: Will you be buying GTA IV on day one?

Randy Pitchford: Already pre-ordered the safe-deposit box limited edition.
