PS3 Unreal Tournament III Patch Inbound

Undoubtedly the biggest-selling PS3 game to date, Call of Duty 4 got patched this week and word comes in today that Unreal Tournament 3, currently a timed exclusive to the big black console, will be getting a patch on March 27th. While I haven’t yet played COD4 — go on, gasp in horror if you must — I bought, played all the way through the campaign and really dig the mod support in UT3 so I’m happy to see the patch is on the way.

The patch notes don’t specifically say whether this brings it up to date with the fixes on the PC versions, but it does acknowledge something I hadn’t noticed before. The EU release of UT3 includes some fixes that didn’t make it into the US version, which is why folks couldn’t play each other across the pond. This new patch adds fixes to both versions of the game and brings them up to parity.

What this also means, of course, is that the Xbox 360 version of the game — which is still in development and has no release window yet let alone a release date — will benefit from having a stronger and more stable code base. The big danger to UT3 on the 360, of course, is that other super-muscular action-packed Epic franchise due to land on the console this Fall, a gritty little number you might have heard of called Gears of War 2. This makes me think that if Epic doesn’t get UT3 out onto the 360 by mid summer at the latest they might as well hold onto it until Spring 2009.
