Ones to Watch: March 2008 PC Releases
Well, after an extra day of February, we have finally reached March, which still holds a fair amount of gaming for those playing on the PC. I actually heard PC Gamer, coin this first quarter of 2008, Q5 2007, because a lot of these games were holiday 2007 releases that got delayed into 2008. We have Orcs, Humans, a Dinosaur killer that sports a mohawk, World War II, and some guy who goes by the name Kane. So sit back and get the lowdown on the great games coming to the PC in February.

Starting off the month of March is the next expansion pack for the Warhammer 40,000 Universe, Warhammer 40K: Soulstorm. The new expansion from THQ is a standalone expansion, so you don’t have to own the previous games in the series (but really you should, they are quite good). Unlike the previous games, this one has less of a story focus, and is a conquest based game, where you have the Kuarav system, and you choose a faction to fight for the system. The game looks rather tight and the new flying units along with the Sisters of Battle add a new dimension to the game. One big downside is that the developer just closed up shop and may not be able to support the expansion in the future with any patches. Look for Warhammer 40K: Soulstorm on March 4th.

While it is another World War II RTS game, the focus for Sudden Strike 3: Arms For Victory, is on joint force operations. You control land, air and sea units as you attempt to stop the Japanese army in the Pacific theatre of the war. The developers have allowed use of all these different assets to allow players with different styles to figure out the best way for them to win the battle. The World War II era is really getting long in the tooth, but the Pacific side of the war has been used less which might work to the game’s advantage. Look for Sudden Strike 3: Arms For Victory on March 10th.

Sticking to a once a month schedule, Sam and Max are back in Sam and Max: Chariots of the Dogs. The game furthers the story that ended in the third game, with one of our favorite characters in the Sam and Max universe coming up missing. So now, you are paired up with Flint Paper trying to track down where the missing person is at. Some may not like the short playtimes, but the games are so polished that you are doing a disservice to yourself if you are not playing these games. Look for Sam and Max: Chariots of the Dogs on March 13th.

After a six week delay, Turok finally comes to PC gamers. Turok has had a rocky past on the PC, the last good one of memory was the one that came with Voodoo Rush cards way back in 1998. But this one retcons Turok’s backstory, and makes him a space marine that is chasing a rogue soldier named Roland Kane. Some will take the revamping of Turok’s origins and the fact that it pays no homage to its long history, but you still get to kill dinosaurs by the bucketloads, so it can’t be all that bad. Look for Turok on March 18th.

One of the grandfathers of RTS games came back last year in Command and Conquer. Now, an expansion pack, Command and Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath, is coming and will add new units, and subfactions for all three of the main forces in the game. The game has a new story, that will include new cut-scenes for all those that enjoy them. Kane’s Wrath focuses on what happened in the Third Tiberium War and then gives us some missions post Command and Conquer 3. While some may be tired of the Command and Conquer universe, it does add some more backstory to the game and even gives us more Kane. Look for Command and Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath on March 24th.
