Mass Effect “Bringing Down The Sky” DLC Impressions
Well, being that I was at home sick today, I decided that I was going to get the new “Bringing Down the Sky” content for Mass Effect. It is a 400 point 235.4 MB download. It is suppose to clock in at about 90 minutes of extra play, and of course, introduces the Batarians, which up to this point have only been mentioned in the Mass Effect book and in passing throughout the original game. The net worth of this download package will all depend on your love for the series.
Upon downloading the content, start up Mass Effect, and you will notice on your star map that there is a new notation, mentioning Asteroid x57. Plot a course and you end up on the face of an asteroid that is plummeting towards an Alliance populated planet, which is happening on purpose once you notice the fusion rockets that are powering its course. I won’t go deeper into detail, but suffice to say that the Batarians are involved and are looking for revenge on humanity for prior defeats.
The content fits well into the universe, but beyond the asteroid, it has no real bearing towards your crew or even the council at the Citadel. It would seem that having Batarians show up in Alliance space would generate more interest from the main players of Citadel space, but nope, they don’t seem to care. There are a lot of directions that they could of gone with this, but it seems as if Bioware just decided to populate a small asteroid, and contain everything on that one rock. There are one or two other side quests on the asteroid, but just not enough to really keep you busy.
That becomes the main issue, is that most people have characters that are powered up to the hilt, and will roll over this new content without breaking a sweat. I finished everything available on the rock in about 58 minutes, which seems to be a bit on the pricey side when you factor that I paid $5.00 for that one hour of content. I did like having the Batarians, as they are a huge nemesis of humanity due to their many battles, but they are just underused. So far, they have not even shown up randomly on other worlds yet. I felt the purchase was worth it in the long run, but that may be more due to my love of the Mass Effect universe.
One warning however, and that is that you need to have a saved game that has you in command of the ship and the option to explore the universe. Without that, you will not be able to access the additional content.
I won’t give it an official score, but if you wanted to know where I felt it came in on our scale, it is a solid 3 out of 5, just due to how quick I got past the content. Memo to Bioware: Get more content out and make it a bit longer.
