UT3 on 360 Still Needs Mod Nod; PS3 Update Coming

UT3 Main
It’s not like Epic is hurting for revenue from great games, what with UT3 on PS3 doing well and yesterday’s announcement of Gears of War 2, but the time put in on UT3 for the 360 looks to be in limbo. When asked if the Xbox Live Community meant Microsoft was now officially more open to user-generated content, Epic Games VP Marc Rein responded that no, this was different and that there’s no progress with Microsoft yet.

He did say that the way mods are handled on the PS3 will be improved, but gave no specifics.

Personally I think it’s really strange how every mod, be it a mutator, level, or whatever, has to be put in the same subfolder with the exact same filename on your flash memory card (or USB drive) for transfer to the PS3. This makes moving over mods a very slow, one-at-a-time experience and makes storing them more clumsy than not. Having video how-to’s on ut3mod.com is nice, but needing to have them in the first place is a bit odd. Why not let us browse to the mod file on the card? That said, the easiest route is when they download automatically from the person hosting the game with them, so that’s not bad.

Update: Kotaku asked Microsoft about this at their blogger breakfast and their response is…well…I like to avoid swearing.

Why can’t the 360 create Unreal Tournament mods?

Satchell: I can’t comment on what Sony is doing. How are they protecting gamers from obscene content, infringing content and harmful content. What stops mods from harming your system? XNA is very secure.

Maybe they don’t care about security as much as we do.

Microsoft said the same thing about Sony not caring as much about security when asked if they would consider allowing non-proprietary hard drives on the Xbox 360.

Satchel apparently doesn’t know much. There are limits to the UT3 mods on PS3 which include, if memory serves, no custom sounds or custom character 3d meshes. This apparently satisfied Sony’s desire to avoid infringing content.

Thanks to our own James for the heads-up.
