Square’s PS3 White Engine renamed Crystal Tools, will be used for 360, PC, Wii.

Square-Enix’s much-hyped “White Engine,” which was developed as a platform around which Final Fantasy XIII would be built for PS3, is no longer a PS3 exclusive. This will be the 3D engine they’ll use for all their games now, company-wide, platform-independent. The 360 and PC are mentioned specifically, and to some extent, the Wii, but I foresee scaling issues.

That said, this is definitely the way to go. I’m surprised EA doesn’t have their own engine that they build all their games on, which evolves over time. Even Nintendo, who builds everything on the same freaking console, builds their engines custom for each game, though sometimes they use existing titles as a starting point (the way Super Mario 64 became Ocarina of Time).

Sometimes it’s bad to use the same basic engine for multiple games. Sometimes they all feel the same, look the same, etc. Using the same engine can lead to strange similarities between titles.

So maybe it’s better off that they don’t share THAT much tech.
