Phil Harrison’s Resignation: Sony’s GDC Surprise.

Submitted by on February 25, 2008 – 8:50 am4 Comments

phil_harrison.jpgSony’s big GDC surprise didn’t turn out to be anything about Home, LittleBigPlanet, a new PS3 SKU, or in-game XMB. The big surprise is Phil Harrison is resigning from the Presidency of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios as of February 29th, just a few short days from now.

To be fair it wasn’t announced until early this morning, so it didn’t happen during GDC, but still it’s something that surprised me. The PS3 is just starting to get some traction in the marketplace, perhaps more due to the win of Blu-ray than anything their games division is doing, but still it’s something positive to trumpet. Maybe this will be what Harrison writes on his resume when going on interviews.

I’m going to miss him. He was well spoken and the media seemed to enjoy his press conferences and delivery of announcements. He did extremely well at GDC 2007 when revealing and demonstrating Home and introducing LittleBigPlanet, so I’m wondering what other major gaming-related company he might land at. Could be Microsoft. Could be Electronic Arts. Could be Activision Blizzard or whatever that company is called now. Until he steps forward and says where he’s going people will be watching and waiting to find out where he went and, even more importantly, why.

I’m not surprised at all, especially after he blasted Sony Japan at a GDC Q&A. This isn’t like an American company with a Japanese branch. I don’t care what corporation you work for, you simply don’t say this:

    ————–

It’s frustrating for me to experience, because I’ve been saying for years that playing games together is the future, but the guys in Japan [Sony] said that people just didn’t play that way,” he said.

Harrison’s been leading the family-friendly gaming charge for years now with the likes of SingStar and Buzz. But it sounds like Sony Japan thought he was talking rubbish, until the Wii came out and Nintendo won the war in record time.

“The Wii ads show the perspective from the television – of people on the sofa having fun together – which is very clever, so how pissed off am I?” We’re sure it was said with a smile though. After all they do pay his massive wage…

    ————–

He was forced out, not doubt in my mind. Resign gracefully or be fired and for good reason.

Hm very good point. Can’t be bad-mouthing your employer.

Quite a loss, though, being so involved with PlayStation for the past 15 years.

He did a good job with his time there. Definitely a pleasant and honest disposition.

There’s no excuse for airing a company’s dirty laundry like he did, however.

I think I would have rather heard more about LittleBigPlanet.
