Champions Rises From The Vaporware Ashes to Become An MMORPG
The year was 1990 and I was jumping out of my seat reading Games Magazine (the precursor to PC Gamer), and saw an article that discussed the upcoming Champions game. It was set to be an RPG that would based on the pen and paper game of the same name. The game was to have fully destrucible environments and the ability to create hundreds of different looks for your characters. After three years of teasing with articles and screenshots, the game officially became Vaporware as the company working on the game stopped all development. Cryptic has decided to resurrect this game from the graveyard to replace their recently cancelled Marvel MMORPG.
Champions Online is setup to offer total character customization. The player will be able to modify their characters with so many different options that it will be hard to create two characters exactly the same. The rules for the game will come out of the sixth edition of the Champions pen and paper rulebooks. No release date is set, but it looks like it could be coming sometime in 2009. Beyond this info, there is not much else known, but the official website, ChampionsOnline is to be updated as new information arrives.
