All PlayStation Platforms Outsold Xbox 360 In January
Don’t look now but the PS3 actually outsold the Xbox 360 in January. So says NPD, and the information came out mere hours after Microsoft sniffled and hemmed and hawed that they were having supply problems. As a matter of fact all of the PlayStation platforms on the market seemed to outsell the Xbox 360. No not combined, silly, individually. Oh and the Wii only outsold the PS3 by 5,000 units?
Wii – 274K (from 1.35 million)
PlayStation 3 – 269K (from 798K)
PlayStation 2 – 264K
Nintendo DS – 251K (from 2.47 million)
PSP – 230K (from 1.06 million)
Xbox 360 – 230K (from 1.26 million)
I won’t get too excited because this bump in PS3 sales is most likely due to Blu-ray’s decisive lead in the high definition disc format war. Oh wait, I WILL get excited because the PS3 is the best and most upgradeable Blu-ray player you can buy and plus once it’s in your house to play gorgeous Blu-ray movies it’s ready and waiting for some gaming attention.
And now Sony needs to do what I’ve been begging them to do all along. Release a set of full-fledged casual games for everyone to enjoy now that the box is making its way into homes. Things like cards, chess, maybe some bowling, pool, and checkers. Things like what we’ve seen screen shots of in Home.
GDC is next week kiddos. Keep an eye out on Tuesday for anything interesting (or nothing interesting if Sony disappoints again).
