Sega’s Master System coming to Wii Virtual Console.

So, back in the day when most people in North America were playing games on the NES, others were enjoying themselves with a little black and red console from Sega called the Master System. This was an 8-bit system like the NES with a large number of games available, most of which ended up being remade as a superior Sega Genesis game when that system appeared. While the Master System never did have much of an impact in the US, some other territories were a little more balanced in Sega’s favor.

Now, news has come from Japan that Sega’s Master System will be arriving on the Wii Virtual Console shortly in Japan, and then later around the world. I don’t know how interested I am in playing these games. The tech is identical to that used in the Game Gear, and I’ve played the Sonic games on that platform. IGN’s article says Sega will be bringing those games to the service as well, and to be honest, why not? I’ve heard there are some decent RPGs on the Master System, but I guess we’ll have to see what we get. I was hoping the next one we’d hear about would be the MSX.

Genesis/Megadrive games are already available on the Wii Virtual Console, but there’s no sign of anything from Sega CD, 32X, or any of Sega’s later systems, the holy grail of which, for me, would be Dreamcast, but I would also accept Saturn. So uh, yeah. Master System? Wrong direction through time, Sega and Nintendo.
