Pikmin protagonist Olimar to Brawl as stupidest idea in roster yet.

So if you’ve played or even looked at either of Nintendo’s stellar Pikmin games (and I do mean that, these RTS games are something else) you know that the pikmin and their erstwhile leaders, Olimar and company are very, very small. It takes a couple of pikmin to carry a bottlecap effectively, and they’re only slightly smaller than Olimar.

The Super Smash Bros: Brawl developer blog bears the announcement now that Olimar with be a playable fighter in the game. Really. It will be Olimar with a small contingent of Pikmin. All I have to say about this is that I don’t understand why time and energy is being spent on such a ridiculous idea. Scaling discrepancies aside, this is not a character anyone really cares about. Even someone like me, who loved both Pikmin games, doesn’t give a crap about Olimar. He’s like Rayman was in the Raving Rabbids games. A tool. A supporting actor. Just there to move the story along.

Speaking of which, where are the Rabbids in this game?

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but that’s seriously a poor argument not to have a character in a game.. scaling discrepancies?

Also, Pikmin has quite a following.. and it was a new IP developed exclusively by the mind that brought us Mario, Link and Donkey Kong, Miyamoto himself.

To say that no one really cares about Olimar would be like saying no one cares about Animal Crossing or Donkey Kong.

Aside from that, this is a game where a clone of a legendary soldier, a mercenary fox that pilots spacecraft, an Italian plumber that saves princesses and the princess herself all can duke it out within the world that is occupied by a Hero chosen by the 3 goddesses of Hyrule.. and you want to bring up issues with Olimar’s size or even how he’ll play?

As they say, to each his/her own, I suppose. I, myself, thought it add more depth to character gameplay. It started with Zelda/Sheik, then Zero Suit Samus was revealed followed by the Pokemon Trainer.

That level of depth just sounds great.. and each of those characters will prove interesting depending on someone’s play style, as well as for some experts to master them completely.

Yeah, you know what else was a stupid idea? Flying with a raccoon tail. That made no sense at all!

    Woo! Fight!

With Brawl looking like a major media event for Nintendo there’s no better way to get a higher profile for a mascot or character than to put him in the game. Just having the character in there means people are going to try playing him, and animations and special moves will introduce new players to ideas from the series.

This also probably means that the Pikmin series will be coming to the Wii at some point.

I agree with everything you guys say, but I still think this character is more than a little baffling. I would love a “horde of pikmin” character, but that might work better as an assist trophy. I just don’t find enough depth to the character for him to be a playable fighter. Absurdity (soldier clones, raccoon tails) doesn’t bother me at all. I like absurd. The issue is that with the huge pantheon Nintendo has to draw from, this is an eye-roller. Even with no interest in Pok√©mon, I accept the Pok√©mon trainer, so I suppose I need to accept Olimar to get the Pikmin into the game. It might be worth it to see dozens of pikmin show up and carry your squirming opponent off an edge to his doom.
