Ones to Watch for PS3 in January 2008

Burnout Paradise

The big game for January has to be Burnout Paradise, coming from Criterion (now part of EA) on the 22nd. However, if you haven’t at least given last month’s release of Unreal Tournament III a rent you’re missing out on something special. I recently turned down a cheap copy of Call of Duty 4 while I wait for Epic to get the PS3 toolset released so I can reward them by buying my rental of UT3.

We could also see Ubisoft’s Nectar-infused shooter Haze meet its January 15th release date. The buzz over Haze has been mixed, but everyone is quite willing to be impressed by some tight gameplay and Nectar-powered innovations if the developers deliver, but even then it might be ignored in favor of the strong slate of shooters from the past couple of months. A demo to whet our appetite wouldn’t hurt.

PixelJunk Monsters should bring a tower-defense style of simplified RTS experience to us sometime this month on the PSN from developer Q-Games. They’re aiming for the Japanese market that hasn’t embraced RTS games according to their Blog posts so this might be a snappy game with a light learning curve to reduce frustration. Again, a demo would be nice to give us an idea of what we’re up against.

Other than that on the 8th we should have Cabela’s Monster Bass from Activision Value for all those PS3-owning fishermen out there and EA’s NFL Tour. Another football game? In January?
