As Live Sputters; Microsoft Pledges Free XBLA Game

Submitted by on January 4, 2008 – 12:43 am2 Comments

Thanks for everything....Thirteen days into this fiasco, Xbox Live is still experiencing service interruptions and general odd behavior. Earlier this evening, I was unable to log into Live and was forced to go back to playing UT3. As consolation for our troubles, Marc Whitten (GM of Xbox Live) has just pledged over at Major Nelson’s blog that they will be offering an Xbox Live Arcade title completely free of charge.

Marc also cleverly masks the gift as a, “celebration of record success for the service.” I’d much rather just have a free month of Xbox Live, or at least a few more weeks.

Marc Whitten on MajorNelson.com - As a result of this massive increase in usage we know that some of you experienced intermittent Xbox LIVE issues over the holiday break. While the service was not completely offline at any given time, we are disappointed in our performance………….we would like to offer a token of our appreciation to all of you in celebration of record success for the service. And as a thank you for your loyalty during this holiday period, we will be offering all of our Xbox LIVE members around the world access to a full Xbox LIVE Arcade game that will be available to download free of charge. In the coming weeks we will be sharing the specific details of this offer with you.”

While a free copy of Frogger sounds all fine and dandy, what good does it do for me if I can’t log on to download it? Is this enough?

As I am unsure of the actual costs of XBLA games, it doesn’t sound too unreasonable so long as its whatever game the player wants and not whatever crap they feel like giving away.

I’m glad to see that they are picking up the slack on this one, but the PR spin is a complete load of bull, and only what one would expect when its coming from a multi-billion dollar company that is publicly traded on the stock market.

I believe it is a game of your choice. Ethically, it should be, but the average XBLA game is about 15 bucks. James you made some good points there. I too expected to read that letter and see “1 month free of Live”.

It’s not like you have a choice to go somewhere else for your Xbox online gaming center however, if you’re not happy.
