Xbox Live Stability Begins to Mirror Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 hardware is renowned for it’s reliablity issues, it’s old news here and on every other gaming blog. While Xbox Live can definitely be spotty now and again, with sporadic issues cropping up every few months, no pattern has truly existed until recent weeks.

In the past week, Xbox Live has been troubled by numerous issues including spotty marketplace performance, the inability to log into Live, the inability to recover a gamertag and supposedly some pretty nightmarish wait times when matchmaking (I have yet to be able to log in to confirm the matchmaking issues). Major Nelson has been blogging repeatedly via Majornelson.com (which, as I’m writing this seems to be down) and via Twitter, attempting to keep the masses at ease.

These issues are obviously due to the influx of new Xbox 360 customers this Christmas but I refuse to let Microsoft use this as an excuse. I find it inexusable to think that Microsoft didn’t properly prepare for additional holiday sales, the sales numbers aren’t a surprise to me so they sure as hell shouldn’t be a suprise to them! Top the sundae with a $50 a year cherry for their currently “sometimes on” service and this blogger has quite a fatty dessert!

Is the time finally here that the greatest gaming service of all time, Xbox Live, has buckled to the shoddy worksmanship that Microsoft is so renowned for? I’ve seen Live teeter for quite some time and this additional holiday stress combined with what’s likely to be a skeleton crew in Redmond has finally toppled the gargantuan service over. It’s now over a week of constant service interruptions……and counting.

    this is not a big deal at all considering it works all year round geez people just have to do something different for what a couple of days. deff being blown out of proportions.

    No, it’s not being blown out of proportions. This is a classic example of a paid-for Quality-of-Service which is not being upheld (see also: your actual high-speed internet access speed).

    I know I’m repeating myself, but this is one of those ridiculous parts about paying to play online. By paying for a service that is not 99.9% reliable (at 1 week only, that’s ~2% of your service for the year, and let’s not forget about the downtime that occurred when Halo 3 hit), the consumer is only cheapening themselves.

    I know that a few individuals are waiting to see what the PR factory will roll out around this downtime and how the gamers will be compensated. This is just like when WoW went down during a big influx, except that Blizzard turned around and ate the cost of people’s subscriptions because the consumer paid for a QoS and it was not being received.

    Would you buy a car, only to find out that 2 weeks out of the year you can’t drive it?

    yes i would if that car was 5$ a month besides theres already talk that they are going to compensate people. also 2% thats 1$ woopied do

    You have to put things in perspective. $5/month is a lot of money for the service being provided. I bet make a LOT more than you do Sifer, but I still won’t scoff at losing 2% of my investment in something. It’s thinking like your statement that has allowed the consumers to lose their rights and to pay more than we should: overpriced HDMI and fiber optic cables, the “$10 Hi-Def surcharge” (which deserves a discussion all on its own), Xbox Live (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Entertainment_Network or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DWANGO and why online gaming should never be paid for (MMO’s are different))

    “I bet make a LOT more than you do Sifer” so wat i wasn’t implying your cheap i just dont value 1$ as much as you do now if it was 5$ 10$ then it would be a different story. im not sure on this but as for online play dont they need servers and constant updating and monetering doesn’t that cost money?
