Think HD-DVD Caught Up? Think Again.

It’s a rough and tumble world in the HD disc format war right now. With Paramount’s recent move from supporting both formats to supporting just HD-DVD you’d think that the HD-DVD sales would be making big inroads. Think again.

This week’s release of the PS3 ads on the PlayStation Store highlighted the third Pirates of the Carribean movie in the clip that touched on the console’s Blu-ray capabilities and I didn’t recognize why they’d pick that movie. Apparently the release caused quite a splash. For the week ended December 9th, fully 76% of all HD movies sold where Blu-ray.

For all of 2007 we’re looking at 65% of discs sold being Blu-ray while since the format’s inception 62% of the HD discs sold were Blu-ray. The next big release coming to both formats will be the newest Harry Potter movie. Being on both Blu-ray and HD-DVD will prove most instructive and given all the special effects of the Potter flicks it should look mighty nice no matter which way you go.

As we’ve seen with Sony’s struggle to woo developer mindshare away from Microsoft’s gaming platform, where the content goes is where the dollars will flow. If Blu-ray can keep up the momentum it may shorten the fight, but it does look like the big marketing muscle behind HD-DVD and the plummeting pricing on HD-DVD players are going to draw this one out for a while yet.
