PSP Firmware 3.80 Branches Out Into Flash Memory.

Hot on the heels of PS3 Firmware 2.10 is PSP Firmware 3.80 adding a new internet radio feature to the Network column on the XMB. By activating the Internet radio item you get the option to download and install two different streaming radio applications. The first brings in Shoutcast stations and the second brings in Icecast stations. Both of them seem to be Flash plugins that need to be installed to the Memory Stick Pro Duo and are activated by specially written web pages served from within PlayStation.com.

This is, to my memory, the first time the PSP has expanded to the point that it’s installing applications on the user-added flash memory. We already have Flash-stored games via the PSP Store, so will we grow beyond Flash plugins reaching out to code on the memory stick? Time will tell.
