If you want Space Invaders done right, you need to do it yourself. Again.

Space Invaders is a gaming icon. Along with Asteroids and Pac-Man, it represents, to me, the most important stage arcade gaming has seen to date: its birth as a place to get a fun and quick gameplay session. Every iteration of the franchise has drawn my attention, in hopes that it will make something new of itself in the 21st century, and all I’ve been given thus far is repeated disappointment… so much so that new arrivals with the SI name just don’t have that same shine anymore.

Space Invaders Revolution, also developed by Taito in 2005, averaged 49% on Metacritic. The series made a reasonable appearance on GBA in 2002, and other recent attempts haven’t even made it to the US.

Apparently, Taito thinks that if you want Space Invaders done right, licensing the name is not the way to do it. I’m inclined to agree in most situations, but they haven’t done a great job themselves so far. With that, here we have Space Invaders Extreme (Yes, I know, anything containing “Extreme” should automatically be ignored) but with the Taito name, I once again have hope that this game will bring this franchise back from the meh. Check out that ridiculous beam weapon.
