I wish console games had quicksaves, too

Submitted by Stephen Munn on December 29, 2007 – 10:00 pmComments

Ah, memories. You remember what it was like to get very far in an NES game twenty years ago and not want to turn off the game because there was no save system? Remember leaving the NES on overnight, TV off, fingers crossed that nobody would turn it off on you so you could finish Ninja Gaiden or Mega Man 2? Those were the days.

Well, wax nostalgic no more, because those days are here again. Once again you can confront and defeat three bosses in a game before realizing where you overlooked a save station. Once again you can leave your console turned on, TV off, while you meet the family at Applebee’s for dinner because for the love of God, you don’t want to have to play this whole part of the game over again.

I’m not asking the game to point me at every save point along the way, but handheld games have quicksaves, and as they get larger, I think console games need them too. Give me the option to save at any time, knowing that when I load that quicksave it is immediately erased. That way I don’t have to leave my console on if I get lost.

End rant.
