Eternal Champions on Virtual Console! Ready six-button controllers.

Eternal Champions to me will always mean two things: one, fighter Xavier Pendragon, the magician who did capoeira cane fighting, taunting with the word simpleton, and two, the Sega Genesis six-button controller. You see, the Sega Genesis shipped with a controller than had a D-pad, a start buttons, and three aligned buttons marked A, B, and C. On Sonic the Hedgehog games, all the buttons did the same thing. On more complex games like Capcom’s Street Fighter II and Sega’s own Eternal Champions, you needed to hit the start button to swap the controls so that your three buttons would go from punches to kicks and back. Irritating? Boy, howdy. There was the other option: buy one of Sega’s six-button controllers, which had three smaller buttons that sat serenely above the stock three. You never had to swap the controls again, and you could kick some butt like never before.

Eternal Champions was a lot of fun, but I’m not sure how it would stand up today. It was a pretty deep game with a very diverse cast of time-travelers, including a superhero from the future and a caveman from… well, what, was he from your pancreas? Think, now. It would have been nice if we could have gotten the Sega CD version of the game, which had a bit more content.

Also today, scrolling shooter ZANAC (not to be confused with alprazalam, OK?) and The Dynastic Hero, a TG-16 game.

WII-KLY UPDATE: THREE NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Dec. 3, 2007

Sometimes the Wii-kly Updates have a nice, unifying them. Sometimes they don’t. This week we scoured the recesses of the classic games vault to come up with some interesting, if unrelated, gems. You can fight mechanized forces, battle with a bunch of fighters in the afterlife or play the role of a heroic regal bug. Like we said: Sometimes they don’t.

Three new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the Wii
