Dungeon Runners Gives More to Free, Paying Players

Dungeon Runners Eat at KarlsNCsoft’s hack-and-slash MMO with probably the most generic fantasy name one could think of — Dungeon Runners — has received a new update that gives lots more to free players and bigger benefits to their subscriber base.

Free players will now watch ads while they play and while resurrecting, some of which will be “treats” from NCsoft itself to keep gamers watching them. New perks for free players include a Bank page to store items, stackable minor potions, and use of any color-coded (a.k.a. more powerful magic items) awarded by NPCs. As for color-coded items found as treasure, a roll of the dice determines if free players can use them. Yellow items have a 75% chance, and purple and rainbow items have a 20% chance of being usable at the moment they are found. Pay players also get a nice upgrade with a new total of three Bank pages.

I’ve fiddled with Dungeon Runners from time to time with a free account and found the gameplay to be too generic for my tastes, but then again I prefer sci-fi fare over fantasy. One thing I really do like is that you can take your character to any of the available servers, much as you can in Runescape without having to transfer them or do anything else special. Plus, the silly item names and sarcastic voice work are both good for a chuckle from time to time. That said, I will definitely be trying the free game out with this new update to see just what I can snag from the higher level item game of chance and how useful the bank page is. If it puts the hack-and-slash-and-loot system into Pavlovian food pellet territory I just might subscribe. Who here doesn’t drink five bucks a week in caffeinated beverages, and that covers a whole month of this game.

I do think putting more valuable items behind a die roll and adding in lesser versions of benefits the paying players get are ingenious updates. That way free players can while away the hours trying to luck into access to a great magical item and get a taste of how convenient it is to have a Bank page. If you haven’t tried it yet, definitely take it for a spin and tell us what you think.
