So as I repeatedly pound my bloodied forehead against a mid-level boss in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, I find myself wondering if I haven’t bitten off somewhat more than I can chew. You see, when I started the game, I found it too easy and quickly decided to start over and head for the higher difficulty level, “veteran” mode. As a veteran of the previous Metroid Prime games, having played the first one inside and out numerous times on the highest difficulty level, I thought I was prepared, and until now, I pretty much was. But here I am in a situation where I understand the strategy and just cannot pull it off. This boss is absolutely destroying me.

I’ve backed myself into a corner, though. I’d have to start over to lower the difficulty level, and then I’d have to play through half the game again. That is not something I’m prepared to do. It’s not that the game isn’t fun, sure it is. But I’d rather finish the game before starting it over again, if I have the option.

Oh, well. Just thought I’d stop in to whine a bit. Back to the fray.

Keep at it. You can do it. And when you do, it will be all the more rewarding.

Here’s one. I recently downloaded Ghosts N Goblins from the original NES on VC. Its somewhat infamous for its high level of difficulty, a fact I never knew when I owned this game back in the day. I played it since a TON in my youth and was too young (or stupid?) to realize how tough it was back then. I decided to download it and give it a go to see if I still had the chops to beat it. Things were going along pretty well when I got to the blue level with the chinese dragon at the end. I has having trouble beating it. Theres a torch you can near the end of the level and I typically avoid the torch because, well, it fucking sucks. But after screwing the pooch on the end boss a few dozen times, I decided, maybe the reason they give you the torch right there is because its a good weapon for the final boss. Yes, this is somewhat true, the torch IS a good weapon for the finall boss. The problem is, if you STILL lose to the final boss, you have to go back to the beginning of the level and you KEEP the torch! Now, while the torch is good for the final boss, it nearly makes the rest of the level unplayable. So here I am at the beginning of the blue level stuck with the torch and no hope to get a better weapon. Do I go back to the beginning? No, I brute force the level until one time with picture perfect execution I’m able to beat it. Now I don’t feel like a pansy and like I still have what it takes. Sure, I had to play the level about 100 times (literally) but you know what, thats what games like this are all about. Crushing you and crushing you and crushing you some more. Sure MP3 shouldn’t be like that in general but if it is once and a while, well, thats not so bad.

Oh yes, I do recall the torch and the dragon. I loved GNG but damn was it ever impossible to beat w/o infinite lives/continues. The worst level for me was the last one (two?) levels, not including the final level that is only the final boss battle. The one(s) where you had to climb through the castle from the basement up.

Paul: I’m guilty of the same thing. When I originally bought Kingdom Hearts, my wife started playing the game first. She played it on the “normal” difficulty. After I watched her play a little bit, I decided that it seemed too easy and that the harder difficulty should be more suited for me. And it was, until I got to Captain Hook and his boss battle was impossible. I even spent a few hours leveling up in the bowels of the ship to no avail. I finally bit the bullet, restarted and in LESS time than I spent trying to defeat him, I was able to get back to the same spot w/ the same (if not more items, level, etc) and was able to finally defeat him.

That’s when I learned my lesson that I’ll play something through on normal first, then try it again at a harder difficulty.
