UPDATED: Eidos Announces Deus Ex 3
Eidos setup a new development studio in Montreal a few months ago, but there was no word on what would be their first project. Today, the word has been released that Deus Ex 3 is the new project that they will be developing for Eidos. The original game, released in 2000, received rave reviews and high acclaim from users and reviewers alike. A sequel followed a few years later, but was widely dismissed as a game that suffered from consolitis, due to a lot of the depth and strategy being removed for the sake of the game being on the Xbox platform as well as the PC.
It seems that the company has been working on a proof of concept for the last few months and presented their findings to Eidos, which decided to greenlight the project. There is no word of what setting the game will use or even if any of the characters will be returning. One telling quote from the interview on Gamasutra seems to make it sound like the second game will be ignored:
“This game was very highly rated at its release in 2000, and we have this great huge mandate to do the third one, and everybody is very excited,” added D’Astous.
No timeline or release date has not been issued by anyone yet, but the goal of the Montreal studio is to work on AAA quality projects, using smaller teams with longer development cycles. Just as an estimation, I would assume the game is 18-24 months out, but this is only speculation of a longer development cycle. We do not have any platforms that will be supported, but I would think that we are looking at a PC, 360 and PS3 platforms.
UPDATED: Here is a link to the EidosMontreal website that has a copy of the teaser trailer. The GameVideos version seems to not be running at this time or is running slowly.
