Star Trek Online Developer Liquidated, Assets Go To Unknown Media Company
Perpetual Entertainment quietly liquidated all of its assets the same day that it put Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising on indefinite hold. The assets from the liquidation were put into an LLC that was to find a buyer for the assets. Only today did it come out that the Perpetual LLC and all of its assets were bought my and unnamed buyer. The buyer is rumored to be in the media industry, and that it is looking to make a splash in the video game field.
Another rumor that looks to have been proven false, was that the game was going to be turned into a more causal game, using microtransactions similar to games like Albatross18. Gamespot debunked this rumor, finding out that the game was actually in a similar state that it has been over the last six months.
It was strange that a new start up was handed the opportunity to make a MMORPG based on one of the biggest sci-fi franchises on the planet. One has to wonder if they bit off more than they could chew with this game as well as the aforementioned Gods and Heroes MMORPG. Where does this leave the franchise? Currently, it looks as if the game has not changed yet, but with a new owner that may not have any experience in the gaming and MMORPG arena, the prospects for this game have definitely gone down a notch or two.
Another issue is dealing with the Roddenberry’s vision of a universe that works in harmony and is suppose to have dealt with issues of racism, violence, crime and greed. Paramount has always held these standards up for the license over the years, which is why an MMORPG could also have a lot of issues in development due to having to control the players in this regard. I am sure that this probably played a hand in the delays and problems with putting a game of this magnitude together.
Will we see this game any time soon? Probably, as a buyer would not pick up the assets if they did not think there was money to be made off of it. Star Trek fans will most likely be willing to test drive an MMORPG for a few months at least just to see what life would be like in Starfleet. If it was me, I would definitely give this game a wide berth until it was certain that a good game was present before signing up.
