RUMOR: 360 Update Will Allow Original Xbox Downloads

Submitted by on November 13, 2007 – 9:03 am5 Comments

Microsoft_Xbox.jpgThe mother of all Dashboard updates might be coming to the Xbox 360 this December. According to a pulled CVG article, Xbox 360 owners will be able to download original Xbox games onto their Xbox 360 this December 4th. The first list of possibly available games are below, all retailing for 1200 points ($15) each.

Halo, Fahrenheit, Fable, Crimson Skies, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex and Burnout 3

We’ll see how this plays out. I don’t think I’d be buying any of these to download but it definitely puts a little extra pressure on Sony.

Oh please say it’s true! I think it’s a great idea and good timing.

I agree, Shane. This is a big deal, downloadable game from your previous generation’s console? I just wonder how many I can honestly fit on my measely 20gb hard drive.

So wait a minute… first, you can’t get these if you have the Arcade or Core version, right?

Second, like Sony, they’re only pushing out the most popular titles, IE stuff people already own. Does Microsoft really think that they have a lot of 360 owners who were not Original Xbox owners?

Yeah, Nintendo’s virtual console is packed with stuff you already own, but at least the VC gets you through Nintendo’s history of silly cartridge formats and covers 20+ years of games.

Third, they better announce a regular release schedule, a la VC. If it’s not scheduled, no one is going to pay attention… witness the “Oh, they did that?” attitude towards Sony’s downloadable PS1 games. (And don’t those even have the benefit of being playable on a PSP?)

And fourth, aren’t these all playable via backwards compatibility anyway?

I’m sure there are many people who went from a PS2 to an Xbox 360 who haven’t felt like picking up the older Xbox games in stores. Hats off to Microsoft for offering this kind of thing, and I’m sure they’ll make some money on it from people just downloading them because they’re there. Plus, $15 isn’t too much to pay for a previous-generation title.

It does however make the smaller Xbox Live Arcade games look expensive at $10. CheapyD was complaining about that in last week’s podcast too. “What happened to the $5 games?”

This is great ive wanted to check out pychonaoughts, although how would people with 13/20 gig drives fit these games unless they’ve manged to some how compress the games down to a gig? even then not all of us have 13 a fair amount i think a person would have on the 20 gig drive would be some were 8-11? maby this is a way to push people to get the 120 gig drive
