Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition sells its millionth copy, vindicating the Wii-make.
Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition has to have been the easiest Wii-make by far. It’s basically a port of the Gamecube code (which is all but identical to Wii code) with IR pointing added for aiming your gun, and motion control for the knife. The added content from the later PS2 version has also been added, everything from an additional play mode and costumes for the player characters to a true widescreen mode. All in all, a quick and not-so-dirty port of what is not only one of the greatest games ever made, but also the game that saved the franchise.
RE4 sold very poor numbers on the Gamecube, which must have been as much a punch in the face for Capcom as it was for Nintendo. We could examine why, but there really is a whole spectrum of problems involved, not the least of which was an installed base on the Cube that really was better off not playing games that gory and violent… present company excepted, of course.
It feels really good to hear from Capcom now that the Wii-make of Resident Evil 4, which has really become the definitive version of the game, has now sold more than a million copies worldwide. The budget price of $30 can’t hurt first time buyers of the game (of which there are, sadly, many) and heck, it even sold me my second copy of the game, and this time, I didn’t buy it used. I’m enjoying watching my wife play through the game as much as I enjoyed playing through the original version over a year ago.
This good news for Capcom is also good news for Wii gamers. Along with the Okami port that’s due next spring, we’re likely to see more ports of more great Capcom games from all over the place. I could hit you with a list, but I’ll start it instead and ask for you to finish. What Capcom games would you most like to see ported to the Wii? I’m crossing my fingers for Dead Rising.
