Get ready for the marketing departments of console manufacturers to go into overdrive because NPD is about to stop putting out free monthly numbers for console sales and will cut back software sku tracking from the top ten titles to the top five. Without clear numbers to point to the accusations and proclamations will be coming fast and furious from the big three. There is, however, an alternative.
The alternative is VGChartz. They claim to have accurate numbers overall by sampling data directly from retailers on a much smaller scale.
Hardware console sales numbers and the top ten SKUs will still come on a quarterly and annual basis, but not having them monthly will still both give the marketing departments maneuvering room and a chance to have them pull the wool over our eyes as to how things are really going.
That doesn’t mean the numbers are going to go away, it just means that if a news outlet wants the monthly numbers they’re going to have to pay for them.
