PSP Store Launches: Wipeout Pure, Syphon Filter: Combat Ops
Sony has given the PSP a brand new web-based PlayStation Store of its own featuring PSP-only content and full downloadable games. Formerly available only in Japan, the web version of the Store allows you to purchase content and download free content for your PSP but requires a a Windows-only Downloader application to install it to your PSP.
This kind of unified installer for PSP content is very long overdue. You used to have to install things like demos directly to manually-created, specially-named folders on the memory stick and either download wallpapers using the built-in web browser or copy them, again, to specific folders on the memory stick. Unfortunately for now, Mac users are left out in the cold, and if Sony’s Windows-only Media conversion utility is any judge I wouldn’t expect that to change.
While new installation methods for older media types are all well and good, the biggest news alongside the debut of the store are a pair of downloadable PSP titles. First we have a digital download version of the very popular Wipeout Pure and a brand new game we last saw in a limited-time beta on the Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow UMD: Syphon Filter: Combat Ops.
The web store is organized similarly to the PS3′s store with items in categories, and there is a lot of brand new content in the store today including three brand new full-version PSP games now in downloadable form. The three games are Wipeout Pure at $14.99, Gangs of London for a rather beefy $19.99, and Syphon Filter: Combat Ops for $9.99. Combat Ops is a brand new title which looks to be the online-multiplayer focused Syphon Filter that beefs up the online multiplayer already found in Logan’s Shadow.
The first downloadable demos available are for two resent releases, Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow and SOCOM: Tactical Ops.
There are already several wallpapers available. The games and number of wallpapers are:
Parappa the Rapper (2)
SOCOM: Tactical Strike (2)
Syphon Filter: Combat Ops (2)
Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow (2)
Wipeout Pure (1)
Under videos we now have a SOCOM Tactical Strike Trailer, Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow E3 trailer, Beats(tm) Trailer, and PSP Feature Video.
Rounding out the content are two free themes for the handheld, the Classy Pink Theme and the Cookie Theme.
It’s an excellent haul for the first week of the PSP PlayStation Store. I’m looking forward to taking Combat Ops for a spin. Check it all out right here.
