PS3 2.0 Tomorrow, In-Game XMB Still MIA

“The PS3 is turning on and off all by itself! Should I call the fire department?”

According to a press release I first read over at MaxConsole, the much-anticipated V2.0 Firmware will hit the PS3 tomorrow. The highlight of the release is the ability to turn your PS3 on and off from your internet connected PSP. There’s also discussion of custom playlists in the release, which is pasted after the jump.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any mention of an in-game XMB becoming available. This is something that the system desperately needs, if not at least the ability to communicate with others while in a game. I really haven’t been waiting for the ON/OFF feature in the XMB (although I can’t wait until I get to scare the crap out of my Wife with it.)

Hopefully it’s in there but right now it doesn’t seem to be the case.

    I just saw that PS3Fanboy is angry that ThreeSpeech broke the news early. They had a feature of some sort ready to go since they had exclusive access to the information here in the US.

    I’m curious what’s under the new PSN icon, but with the official press release saying nothing about it I doubt it’s anything new or interesting.

    At least I have something small to add to my PS3 1st Birthday story I’m working on for this month.

    I know, for a 2.0 release you kinda expected more than what was announced. I mean, come on.. personalized XMB? Whoopty-friggin-do. The ability to turn on the PS3 from the PSP, while nice, is still not 2.0 worthy except that it probably adds a large amount of new API’s and support. Items of this nature usually warrant a major version revision but for a console, I’d kinda hope for more REAL capability wrapped into something like a 2.0 release.
